Bess Bistro on Pecan

I’ve heard plenty about Bess Bistro on Pecan, Sandra Bullock’s restaurant on West Sixth, so when 80% off coupons from restaurant.com came up for it, I had to take the $25 gift certificate for $2. Didn’t know there was a $50 minimum when Dad and I went there for lunch. Alright, we say, let’s spend $50 on lunch!

Two full salads, two sandwiches, two coffees and a beer later, we’re at $49.53 or something ridiculous. But I am happy, incredibly impressed by Bess, and can’t wait to write about it. Here’s the big deal: EVERY SINGLE MEAT ON THEIR MENU IS FROM A LOCAL FARM. Yes, the deli meats, the sliced turkey, the roast beef, the chicken, the steak, the … EVERYTHING!

And everything is delicious. I started with the Chopped Cobb Salad, which had a lemon vinagrette that was too tangy for me, but the presentation and flavors besides the overpowering lemon were great.

Then, I moved on to the Turkey & Gouda Melt, which was delicious. Because I am doing the Spartan 300 Challenge, I didn’t eat the bread. So I opened up the thick, multi-grain toast and ate the melted turkey and cheese out of the middle. It was still stunningly delicious. Maybe because it’s happy local turkey?

My dad had the Roast Beef Sandwich and really enjoyed it too. So much so that I couldn’t get a pic of the whole thing–he was too busy eating! Here’s a half:

Sorry about the quality of the pics … my camera is still at Olympus’ warehouse because I haven’t had time to call and yell at them for wanting to charge me $90 to fix it, so these are iphone quality shots. :-)

Anyway, Bess’ decor is perfect: old patterned floor, exposed brick wall, low lighting … schedule your next date or group dinner there. Lunch, despite the fact that we managed to spend $50, would be a perfectly reasonable $8.95 for the turkey melt or $6.95 for the chopped salad… snag it!

  1. Dang! That camera repair sounds expensive. You should get one of those Flip camcorders (http://www.theflip.com). I bought mine for $130 or so but they are now selling for $60 on Amazon because they came out with a newer HD version. I think vids on the blog would really crank it up to the next level.

  2. I’ve had a lovely time every time I go there…the bartenders rock! Her new floral/coffee/bakery looks interesting! All local as well! Go Sandy!

  3. This is one of those place that I crave a single dish from. Fried artichokes with crispy spinach! A vegetarian’s fried food dream.

  4. i went to bess for my birthday last year and it was wonderful. the dinner lighting was a bit too dark, though; i could barely see my friends sitting across from me, but i guess had i been on a date the dim lights definitely would have set the mood.

it was good meeting you and lisa the other day; i appreciate you putting me down for those tickets but i didn’t end up making it out there, which was a bummer. i’m still sore from that work out, and i’d still like to drop in on one of those bootcamp classes that lisa said she does. anyway, thanks for letting me walk back with y’all and maybe see you around!
