Win a McCormick & Schmick’s Gift Certificate!

In a This is Life in Austin FIRST, I’m holding a contest! Tell me your fave Under-$10 Deal about town and you could win a $10 gift certificate to McCormick & Schmick’s! I’m talking about any deal–food, drinks, clothes, shoes, whatever. Let me in on the secrets! I’ll choose the best–could be the most unique, could be the cheapest, could be the one I didn’t know about, this is completely and utterly subjective to Lyssa’s taste–and you’ll win $10!

This is all in honor of McCormick & Schmick’s new 10 for $10 lunchtime menu. It features the requisite sandwiches and salads with decidedly fancy twists: things like Oregon Bay Shrimp & Angel Hair Pasta, Chipotle Chicken Salad Wrap, Coconut Shrimp Salad or Grilled Salmon Ciabatta.

Known for a super-cheap happy hour and sometimes belittled as a corporate conglomerate by the locavores of Austin, McCormick & Schmick’s actually features produce from several local farms, including:

- Bella Verdi Farms in Dripping Springs supplies micrograins, basil and lettuce

- Jenschke Farms in Fredericksburg supplies tomato, pepper, squash and zucchini

- Smitty’s Farm in the Bastrop area supplies sweet potato

- Young’s Farm in Sunray supplies leafy greans

Suddenly that salad seems a little more fresh, eh? Check out the downtown location at 401 Congress Ave. or the Domain locale at 11600 Century Oaks Terrace.

Don’t forget: Leave me your Under-$10 Deal in the comments section for a chance to win $10! Deadline is Tuesday at 9pm, the winner will be announced Wednesday morning!

  1. The best deal under $10 is the 1/2 off happy hour pizza at Cipollina (http://www.cipollina-austin.com/). Order one between 3:30 and 5:30 PM and you can get a large (it’s a big large!) pizza for less than 8 bucks. Add tax and tip and you’re still under $10 bucks total. And you can get any pizza 1/2 off. Any.

  2. I dig Daily Grill. Mad hh prices for food and drinks…a whole 1.99 menu of yummy food, cheap drinks too.

  3. I’m totally tooting my own horn here, but at The Hideout Theatre (617 Congress Ave) on Thursdays at 8PM there is an improv show called the Threefer that features 3 different improv groups for $3 total. That’s a lot of entertainment, and a good introduction to the world of Austin improv.

  4. My favorite cheap meal is Tacodeli. Personally I go every Friday for the special: ceviche tacos for $2.75 each. They come stuffed with ceviche and guacamole. My other favorite is the Cowboy taco which includes LOTS of beef tenderloin, roasted corn, guacamole, and queso fresco for $3.25. One is plenty; two is a feast. You can add chips and salsa for just $1.

You can get yummy Tacodeli tacos for $2-$3 on Wednesdays at the Triangle’s farmer’s market (or downtown on Saturdays). Then you can stroll around and drink a half-lemonade-half-Nile Valley hibiscus mint tea, or my favorite iced mocha from Texas Coffee Traders. Finish with a chocolate chip cookie from Texas French Bread ($1). I love Wednesdays!

  5. Bahn mi – roasted pork sandwich from Cafe de Bella or Tam Deli w/ a side of spring rolls. A perfect summer meal!

  6. Screaming Goat!

quality food that is (sort of) healthy! They also have the best salsa.

Wednesdays are buy one burrito get one free! Thats two HUGE burritos for under $5. AND $2 cervesas!
Tuesdays are $2 burgers – also have tilapia fillets and veggie burgers – with $1.75 cervesas.
There is a deal every night!

  7. I’m gonna go with Romeo’s $5 at 5, M-F. They have a happy hour menu, with pizzas (big enough to share), and appetizers that are only $5. Plus it’s delicious, the service is great, and the patio is perfect.

  8. I don’t know if this counts as “about town”, but the hummus wrap at Java Dive in Lakeway is divine! I believe it’s about $7 – easily splittable – soooo good.

  9. I am submitting two activities – both FREE!

Wine 101 classes at Twin Liquors: learn about wine making and selection and sample a couple! Classes are usually Wednesday nights (check their website)

Happy Hour Yoga at Yoga Vida – free class on friday evenings (west 7th st studio)

  10. my favorite happy hour spot is joe’s between 5th and 6th on west. if you go wednesdays they have two for one burgers (the california avocado blt is the BEST, especially with ranch!), which makes it about $4.50 a person, and $1.50 lonestars, which means you can get a burger and three lonestars for under $10 (not including tip, though). i also love fridays when it’s half priced apps; my friend and i go and get the chicken nachos, which is large enough to float a battleship, and go halfsies which makes it about $4 each. that leaves plenty of extra $$ for a few drinks before heading down to west sixth for friday night, end-of-the-week shenanigans, which will obviously cost more than $10 (although key bar has a great happy hour that lasts until 9, which is dangerous as i tend to drink those margarita shakers straight out of the shaker with a straw…).
