TCHO Chocolate

About a year ago, I read about a new chocolate company making a new kind of chocolate–straight from the bean, healthier, fair-trade, all the good stuff. And like the Silicon-Valley-software nerds they were, they were offering it to testers as a Beta version. Despite my misgivings that they weren’t encouraging me to Beta test by giving me the chocolate for free, I ordered Beta chocolate for like $9. It was delicious. I didn’t share it with anyone. And I’ve never ordered it again.

Despite my apathy to even the delicious, I thought I’d at least let you in on the secret.

The product lineup includes size wine-varietal-inspired flavors, ranging from floral to chocolatey. You can buy the chocolate in bars, as chocolate-covered treats like mango pieces, in drinking chocolate form, and in its purest form, the cacoa nibs.

Guest Post: TRIO Happy Hour

Downtown Austin’s Trendy New Happy Hour
Review by William Jackson & Sandra Rascon

If you haven’t experienced a Happy Hour at TRIO at Four Seasons, you haven’t truly experienced Happy Hour in downtown Austin.

Austin’s newest place to be “scene” is nestled in the welcoming arms of the Four Seasons, located on the green banks of Lady Bird Lake, smack dab in the middle of the business and world-famous entertainment districts.  When you descend the grand staircase and round the corner, you can feel the excitement as you prepare to embark on what is sure to be a memorable journey of culinary and visual delights and lively conversations.  Is there a bad seat in the house?  We think not.  There’s the inviting outdoor patio overlooking the serene Lake, the spacious main dining room where views of nature peak through the stately windows, or the hip Wine Bar reminiscent of a trendy bar in Miami Beach — TRIO is the perfect setting to network, host a successful business event, or simply decompress.

Prepare to experience TRIO’s charming service, which seems like a perfectly executed theatrical production: attendants swirling in and stealing away almost invisibly, set into motion by nothing more than the subtle movement of your eyes, or the menu, signaling it’s time to let the show begin.  The management is as comfortable as family and has a knack for ensuring the enjoyment of each guest without compromising individuality. Be prepared for a brief, delightful, and engaging conversation that is never intrusive.

Prepare to experience food impressive in its precision.  Wonderful delicacies booming with flavor.  Chef de Cuisine Todd Duplechan has filled the menu with a tantalizing selection sure to delight even the most discriminating palate.  Not to mention menu items can be enjoyed at half-price, an enticing invitation to taste every selection at least once.

Unforgettable are the Mussels drenched in a rich broth of Roquefort, Prosciutto and Riesling – you will ask for a spoon or bread.  Even Truffle Fries rise to the occasion with Rosemary, Garlic and Meyer Lemon Aioli.  Certainly, the little-known three-day marinating process involving sugar is key to this simple yet amazing gourmet delight!  Lamb Sliders are not far behind, these tantalizing mini gourmet burgers are made with local lamb, tzatziki and cumin.

If you have the pleasure of meeting Chef Todd, inquire about the Pecan-Fed Pig, a spicy dish he introduced to us that is not on the Happy Hour menu but SHOULD BE!

If you prefer a cocktail, you won’t get any dirty looks or get your hand slapped, the accommodating bar staff is more than thrilled to make your request.  But, be advised, TRIO is known for its impressive wine selection with over 300 unique selections with 60 served by the glass.  Especially delightful are the Happy Hour selections, which are specifically selected to complement the food.  No surprise here, as the wine is personally selected by award-winning Sommelier, Mark Sayre who received the title of Austin’s Best Sommelier for 2007 from The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas and The Texas Sommelier Association. Mark says, “Baked Gulf Oysters and a glass or two of the Riesling, Schloss Vollrads, Germany, 2007–there’s nothing better.”

If Red is your choice, the secret is out about Cabernet Amavi Cellars, a Washington 2006!  It stands alone as a medium bold that leaves the palate refreshed.  Truly, it is one of the few red wines that can be enjoyed without an edible complement and is a discovery worth making.  If champagne is desired, enjoy a glass of Louis Roederer – well known in France for gracing weddings and special occasions.

The hallmark wine experience at TRIO is that your glass is always filled from a bottle at your table, in front of you.  You’ll feel as if you’re at an exclusive wine tasting event as even the table settings are smartly designed and arranged to mimic those set at an actual wine tasting.

With four star service, elegant cuisine, expansive drink selections, trendy guests, local pundits and complimentary valet for all TRIO Happy Hour clientele, this upscale Wine Bar is everything it should be — allowing you to enjoy life as it’s meant to be.  You can’t help but become a regular.

After all, aren’t you supposed to be Happy and much more enlightened, when you leave Happy Hour?

Happy Hour at TRIO is Monday through Saturday, 5pm to 8pm, 98 San Jacinto Boulevard, Austin, 78701. For additional information, call (512) 685-8300.

DrumJam at Stubb’s tonight

DrumJam plays the Official Blue October Aftershow at Stubb’s tonight, doors at 11:30pm & show at midnight.

I love DrumJam’s live performances, but I also felt the desire to post this because I have to brag on myself for two seconds. Basically, I don’t really like Blue October’s music personally. BUT before they were REALLY BIG and selling out shows and had a platinum album (December 2006), I pitched a story about them to HOUSTON magazine–by warbling “Hate Me” intentionally off key and then outlining the boys’ Texas roots. They bought it and my first REAL feature in a magazine was born. I interviewed Justin, the lead singer, for the article. Imagine being a rookie journalist and having this be your first big piece! So while I don’t love their sound, I can’t help but love Blue October.

I do, however, actually love DrumJam’s sound. So pay the $8 (or free with your Blue October ticket) and get your drum on.

New permanent feature of This is Life in Austin

I’m excited to announce that I’ve installed a new page focused entirely on trends. This isn’t months out–this is what you need to go to the store, buy today, and wear tonight. Some of it will be unreasonable ($795 shoes?!), but it’s all about inspiration, people. So enjoy! Click on the tab above, or this link.

Really, it just looks like this:
When spring has sprung, people tend to think of the pastels associated with Easter and the airy summer whites you’ve missed under the weight of winter sweaters, even here in Austin. But this spring is, like much of the past year, all about color. Color everywhere, especially in strappy, sassy, flirty heels–because the simplest way to make an entire outfit pop is one eye-catching accessories, and in this case, that’s brightly-hued shoes. Thank skirt- and capri-weather for the chance to show these babies off! (Editor’s note: Don’t you EVER wear heels with shorts. MAYBE platforms. But never, ever, ever stiletto heels. Don’t care how dressy you think the shorts are. They are still shorts. And heels and shorts don’t belong together.)

The second major trend we’re seeing is STRIPES. As you strip down for spring and summer, go ahead and Stripe Down too. Stripes never go OUT, per se, but they’re more in than ever before this year. Check out some of This is Life in Austin’s fab finds below:

If you’re interested in purchasing any of the above pieces, click on the title and it’ll take you to awesome mix-n-match site Polyvore, where you can link to the retailers. Sweet! [Can they offer me a commission?]

Top Ten Things to do in Austin

If you’ve only got a weekend (or a friend in town you want to show a good time), here are my picks, from Friday night through Sunday afternoon:

Of course I love a million other things about Austin, but these are my standards: the go-to places and things to do that locals and out-of-towners alike love.

1) Dinner at TRIO ($$$), Olivia ($$) or Guero’s ($)
2) Downtown – Walk dirty 6th for the experience (and maybe a Lat30 jaeger bomb), but party at 5th & Congress–start at Lanai and work your way down to end the night at Marq
3) Run/walk Town, er, Lady Bird Lake
5) Patio lunch at Hula Hut (free range chicken!) or Shady Grove
6) Take a boat out on Lake Austin
7) Dinner & a movie at Alamo Drafthouse (Guinness milkshake!!!)
8 ) Sunday brunch at Moonshine
9) Shopping on South Congress, coffee at Jo’s (celeb-spotting?)
10) A cupcake a Sugar Mama’s

I also posed the question on twitter, and here are the

Top Ten vote-getters for the one restaurant you’d take a friend to in Austin:

1) Shady Grove
2) Moonshine
3) Salt Lick
4) Daily Juice
5) Guero’s / Polvos
6) Oasis
7) Torchy’s/ El Chile
8 ) Blue Dahlia
9) Swad (note: closed on Tuesdays. Tried to go last night.)
10) Uchi

Honeydew Undies

My little blurb on the side brought me this gem from a (guy) friend:

“Two fashion comments:
1. Can we please introduce more women to Honeydew? It’s the hottest stuff on the planet.

2. Would you please rant on trash bag dresses? They are unattractive, unflattering, and resemble the haircut of an 8-year-old from the 70s.”

Here are some Honeydew undies (shop here) … not cheap, but not expensive, and I can personally attest that you don’t have to be as skinny as these models to look smokin’ hot in these undies. And I can personally attest that guys do find them to be the hottest thing you can wear…

Honey Dew ruffled undies<—- this is the style I have …

As for trash bag dresses, well, they’re ugly. Don’t do it. Do Honeydew!

Mighty Fine is taking over Austin!

Shortly after expanding south, Mighty Fine Burgers is stretching up northward too, for its third location. Mighty Fine Burgers, Fries & Shakes opens its third location at the University Oaks Shopping Center (next to IKEA) today.

The company behind the concept – K&N Management -is sure that Mighty Fine will be a big hit with burger lovers and quality-conscious diners alike. The same company runs the four Austin locations of Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q, where they take quality and service seriously. You won’t find a drive-thru, but a welcoming dining room where you share picnic tables with blue and white checkered tablecloths with other diners.

The hamburgers are happy cows, free-range beef that is ground and hand-formed in the restaurant every day. Guests can look through an over-sized window into Mighty Fine’s kitchen and observe their expert team carefully cutting, grinding and forming the patties by hand throughout the day. Mighty Fine only uses all-natural chuck that contains no antibiotics, hormones or preservatives which is always strictly vegetarian-fed. Fries are crinkle-cut, shakes are Blue Bell, and that’s all there is.
