This weekend is jam-packed with star-studded events, what with Texas Relays, Urban Music Fest (Boyz II Men!!), and now Michael Huff and Sir Rod Entertainment are once again teaming up to bring together an A-List of NFL celebrities (most Texas Exes) to participate in a special weekend that includes a Casino Night and basketball game, all benefiting the Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and the Women Called Moses Coalition and Outreach Center in Dallas. Here for more details.

The Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas is the only non-profit, free-standing pediatric hospital in a 46-county region, serving all children from Central Texas every year, regardless of their ability to pay. Dell turns no child away. Their mission inspires us to care for and improve the health of those served with a special concern for the sick and the poor.

The Women Called Moses Center is a non-profit organization created to provide a safe-haven for battered women and their children. Their mission is to educate and provide support for abused women and children and to foster programs that will improve their socio-economic status.

Texas Wine and Food Festival

The Texas Wine and Food Festival jam-packs a long weekend (Thursday-Sunday) with Texas-centric wine and food like you wouldn’t believe. All of our culinary stars are there (Elmar Prambs, Paul Petersen, Tyson Cole, Monica Pope, the list goes on and on …) and the wine flows like water. Many of the amazing events aren’t particularly cheap ($15o for the Culinary Masters dinner at the Four Seasons–and worth every dollar if I had it), BUT there’s one for the bargain-hunter in us all:

Sunday Fair Earlybird Ticket! $40
Noon-5pm on April 19 at The Vineyards at The Salt Lick

Buy Tickets, and see the rest of the Fest’s awesome offerings.

Why so much bacon?

Bacon has been all over the media lately and is popping up in some crazy places. I don’t pretend to understand the trend, but I can tell you where to find free-range bacon! Pederson’s Farms, from Hamilton, Texas, makes excellent hickory smoked uncured bacon that’s sold at Wheatsville (nice new expansion, btw), Whole Foods, and I think even Sun Harvest. Score! For anyone planning on making me bacon, I only like bacon when it’s super-crispy.

Below, a sampling of the ridiculous ways the bacon craze has manifested:

I’m a fan of Bacon Salt (not that I’ve ever tried it), because it started in 2007–way ahead of the trend–and has zero calories! but still makes everything you put it on taste like bacon. Mmmmm. Sold at area HEBs!

Bacon Salt

Calorie-laden versions of bacon-infused dishes include:

Maple chocolate baconPeanut butter bacon cupcake

Bacon-chocolate toffee-type concoction and bacon-and-peanut-butter cupcakes from Chicago bakery The Bleeding Heart Bakery are purely ridiculous. Click through to the bakery’s site for even more pictures of ridiculous cupcake combos.

It’s making its way into jewelry? At least some at-home crafter was smart enough to jump on this trend and put up an Etsy shop for her bacon bracelets:

Is this the monstrosity that started the trend?

Fashion Now at the Domain

Simon Fashion Now Presented by Caress Skin Wear Collection

With Fashion Shows Friday night and throughout the day Saturday, Simon Fashion Now at the Domain is the closest we’ve got to the Fashion Weeks that have just finished hitting NYC, London, Paris, and Milan. The event at the Domain takes advantage of the Domain’s outdoor mall atmosphere with style and skin booths throughout, and individual stores offering treats and discounts.

Tonight, former “Queer Eye” guy Carson Kressley, host of Lifetime’s “How To Look Good Naked,” will host a style show of spring looks and tips for great skin at 6:30pm during Friday night’s Girl’s Night Out, which goes from 5-9pm.

Another fashion show will include looks from Martin + Osa, Lilly Pulitzer, Luxe Apothetique and others.

Saturday, the style events begin at noon with runway shows at 1, 2, 3 and 7 p.m. Betsey Johnson, BettySport, Neiman Marcus, St. Thomas Boutiques, Stuart Weitzman, Michael Kors, and others retailers will participate in the various shows. A post-show party with The Sophisticates presented by Covert Cadillac concludes the festivities Saturday night.

Thursday – Sorry for the late notice!

I totally meant to post these sooner, but got too excited about the 70% off sale! And tonight I’m going to the Justin Timberlake Singalong at Alamo Ritz, BUT here are two other things to check out if you don’t have plans and read the blog in time:

Dazed And Confused w/ Richard Linklater & Brewster McCracken at Alamo Drafthouse Lamar, 7 pm. Writer-director Richard Linklater’s answer to American Graffiti, 1993’s Dazed And Confused is considered a stoner classic for its dusk-to-dawn party atmosphere, but it’s more melancholy than its reputation might suggest. With no greater ambition than securing Aerosmith tickets in the morning, Linklater’s aimless characters go through various rites of passage on the last day of school, each a little apprehensive about making a new transition. As such, it’s a strange choice for a mayoral campaign fundraiser—but then, the candidate in question is the very progressive Brewster McCracken, fervent supporter of Austin’s film industry, so it’s easy to see why Linklater would throw this screening party for him. Here’s hoping McCracken’s own “morning after” is a little less bittersweet. [This is probably sold out, but I don't know]

This, however, is open for business:
