Last minute micro-lending gift!

Only two more Valentine’s posts, I promise. This one–three last-minute super cheap GIFT IDEAS!–and Sweatin’ with your Sweetheart …

1) MicroPlace, an organization that enables loans to the working poor, is offering a Valentine’s special. You can make an investment in the name of someone dear to you, which enables a loan to an entrepreneur in the developing world, who’ll be able to use it to grow her business, and later, pay back the money. Plus, MicroPlace will send a delicious treat of Divine Chocolates (one of the first fairtrade chocolate companies in the world!) to the recipient. Minimum loan is $20, but it will eventually be repaid. (Thanks to my brother for that one, who posted this on his super-cool Big Talk discussion website Between a Duck–check it out!)

2) Doughnuts for Valentine’s Day? A perfect office-wide offering: Krispy Kreme is offering heart-shaped doughnuts topped with icing and sprinkles by the dozen for $7.49. Plus 12 Valentine’s Day cards with a coupon for a free doughnut. That’s love(handles), and lots of really cheap doughnuts. (701 E. Stassney Lane, 851-8888; 12586 Research Blvd., 219-0119; krispykreme.com.)

3) Send a funny e-card at Kate Spade!

Juan Pelota … hahaha!

Much love to Tolly at Austin Eavesdropper for sharing this and making me laugh … I get it! Juan Pelota!

Tolly says: “For reference: Juan Pelota = the coffee shop inside Mellow Johnny’s, and it is named after Lance Armstrong’s one remaining man jewel. (That he still somehow manages to impregnate women with).”

(“pelota” means “ball” in Espanish)

The cause for such a hilarious comment? Nut and Bolt Ride.

C’mon, your day can’t get any better than this.

Seriously, if I was single I would be lovin’ this bike-ride-turned-singles-event where I get to see what fits my hardware!

Thursday Pre-V-Day = tons of events

There are an exorbitant number of happy hours and events tonight, some because it’s Thursday and some because Valentine’s Day is a great excuse for free drinks and snacks, and to sell some stuff in some stores. No matter your leaning, take advantage of a plethora of Thursday-night ideas–and end up at Twestival!

Loosely arranged in order of start-time, I present to you SEVEN things to do tonight:

1) W3LL Valentine’s Happy Hour

With Shimmer & Bliss at W3LL People from 5-7pm for organic love and eco-friendliness. Get personal styling tips from the Shimmer Girls and enjoy a professional make-up consultation from W3LL guru Shirley Pinkson. Antioxidant-rich pomegranate martinis will flow as w3ll! At Bridges on Lamar. RSVP: rsvp@shimmerandbliss.com

2) 101X w/ Chance Mock at Quattros

Don’t have all the deets on this one, but this morning on 101X they were interviewing Chance Mock (former UT QB) and talking about this event at Quattros … free t-shirts from Chance’s new screenprinting company and happy hour prices and prizes? Sounds fun! 5pm-?

3) Champagne and Sheets

Sounds like a pretty great combo, no? Wildflower Organics hosts its 4th Annual Champagne & Sheets from 5-8pm. Across-the-street neighbor Emerald City Press will provide champagne and organic libations, while Austin’s Perla Chocolate is there for the tasting. A jewelry trunk show with Gypsy Born Designs and 20 % off Bella Notte and Legna bedding round out the offerings.

4) TRIBEZA pre-Valentine’s Happy Hour

6-8pm at QUA, the sharks-in-the-floor controversy-creator that recently lowered its age to 21 (although no one really followed the 25+ thing anyway), join TRIBEZA for cocktails and tunes. RSVP to be registered to win gift certificates for romantic nights on the town (must be present to win).

5) Second Street District Shopping

Stores are open late, have goodies like champagne and snacks and discounts, and are primed for last-minute V-Day shopping. Also, there’s an exclusive launch of a wine-based cocktail called VOD at Estilo, but I can’t really figure out how it’s going to be exclusive while shoppers are coming in … so maybe there’s just free VOD for everyone at Estilo? Not sure … 6-9pm

6) Singles Mingle at Hula Hut

Bobby Bones Show’s Valentine’s Day Singles Mingle is where the morning show crew–Bobby, Amy, and Lunchbox–host another Singles Mingle for the 20s-ish crowd of singles at Hula Hut. A live DJ and door prizes complement tons of ‘mix and match’ games including speed dating … so you can meet tons of people! 7-10pm

7) TWESTIVAL!!

For anyone not on twitter–get on it! It’s super fun. Twestival is the meetup for all the area Twitterers, but all proceeds from the event go to get clean drinking water in developing nations. Sumo wrestling and bands are the only two things I’ve heard about, but the gig is at Ace’s so expect some Southern Siren action … one of the bands is soul band including T-Bird and the Breaks, whose bassist I interviewed for next week’s Street Cam! Small world, Austin is. Buy tix here for $5!

Deets:

1.) A Sumo Suit Smackdown on livestreamed TV.

2.) Pics by Michael Cummings from dreaminpictures.com.

3.) A raffle.  One free raffle ticket comes with every entry ticket and you can choose the items you want to potentially win.

4.) A speech by someone from www.aglimmerofhope.org, a partner of charity:water’s who actually drills wells in Ethiopia.  A Glimmer of Hope has given water to over a million people.

5.) A live performance by Austin’s own T Bird and the Breaks.  This dynamic band was picked as one of Austin’s greatest new bands in 2008 by both “The Sound and the Jury” Awards at ACL and by the Austin Music Awards.

6.) Free Stuff!  Everyone there is going to get a free Jungle Disk license to back up all their cool pics, video, and anything else on their computer.  The retail value of this is $20.  You will also receive a coupon for Viva Chocolato for one free gelato.  Yum.

7.) A livestream to www.liveearth.org, which has streamed some of most well viewed livestreamed concerts in history.  This site belongs to Al Gore.

More Valentine’s Day Fun

Remember how I suggested in my last Heart Day post that somewhere to go sans reservations would be Daily Juice or Whole Foods? Turns out Daily Juice is hosting a chocolate party and Whole Foods is hosting a Singles event–but that’s TONIGHT, Wednesday, so you’re probably still safe to head there Saturday night.

Whole Foods “Check Out”  Singles TONIGHT, Wednesday, 6-8pm, free!

If you want a “healthy relationship,” where better to look than Whole Foods Market?  Stroll the aisles and taste decadent chocolates and champagne, flirt over fondue, sample perfect recipes for romantic dinners for two, and mingle on the patio with your new friends.  You might just find a date for Valentine’s Day!

Daily Juice Cafe Chocolate Party, 9pm-1am, $13 advance/$16 door

There’ll be a DJ, chocolate, durian (“Durian, the highly esteemed, edible fruit of Durio zibethinus … tastes like a combination of banana, caramel, and vanilla, with a slight onion tang.” encyclopedia defn), and dancing, so scratch my idea to come here for dinner and make this party the main event!

And a few more random ideas:

Single or attached, treat yourself to milk + honey:

Primpin’ special at SALON by milk + honey
Blowout + make-up + manicure $110. February 7th-15th

Show your lover the love: BackRub 101
Bring your partner and you’ll both learn how to give a back and neck massage. Both receive a 30 minute massage lesson followed by a one-hour aromatherapy massage in the couple’s room. 120 minutes for $265.

One last restaurant special suggestion: Asti or Fino

Both Asti and Fino are offering 3-course menus for $45 a person in addition to their full menus. These specials run Thursday, February 12 through Saturday, February 14th. Reserve without lifting a finger by clicking on http://www.finoaustin.com/fino/event

Best Cocktails Ever

Last night I went to La Condesa, a luscious Mexican restaurant in the true sense of the word, for a tasting of cocktails. Above the funky interior–a mix of concrete and leather banquettes, unfinished wood and Cuban mural–sits Malverde, a bar that will undoubtedly make a huge impact on Austin nightlife. A glassed-in, patio-surrounded black-concrete floored place for more mature audiences to dance and groove to DJ tunes, Malverde will be to Second Street what The Marq was to Fifth–a breath of fresh air. I’m not comparing Malverde to The Marq, for all The Marq’s charm she’ll never be in the same class as Malverde, but The Marq singlehandedly transformed a forgotten strip of bar–5th & Congress–into a downtown destination. And Malverde will do the same with 2nd & Guadalupe, the Lambert’s corner.

Enough analyzing, let’s get down to the dirty details: the drinks. La Condesa will open next week and we’ll talk more about her then, but for now we must talk drinks, and Malverde. (Lest you be confused by the bar being named “BadGreen,” Malverde is the patron saint of liquor in Mexico) Here is what I drank:

cocktails

Naturally, I did not drink all of all of these drinks. I shared them. And a few others not pictured. But sips only!

Here we have a talented team of mixers: Andrea, a sushi-sake vet who will lead Malverde, the star of the show, world-renowned mixologist Junior Merino in the middle, and David, a former Lambert’s bartender who will take charge of the restaurant’s bar.

Bartenders

Junior created the incredible list of inventive cocktails, drawing on the flavors of the food and local ingredients to create some of the greatest drinks I have ever tasted. The flavors blend and meld and mix and smell divine, the salts that accompany some drinks are Junior’s own, mined from Mexico. Naturally, a Mexican restaurant must have many tequilas, and La Condesa will have around 90 100% blue agave tequilas, plus custom infused liquors, like rose-infused rum, habanera-infused tequila and bourbon infused with vanilla, grapefruit, fig and orange bitters.

It is with these house-infused liquors that we begin our tour. We’ll start with my fave, the one I begged Andrea to name after me (“The Lyssa” clearly has as much potential as “The Cosmo”). It’s mashed corn:

grindingcorn2

Mashing the corn releases the aromas. Then, it’s topped with habanera-infused tequila. Habanera is sweeter than habanero and milder in spice, though it still has a lovely pep. The salt rim includes crushed hibiscus.

lyssacocktail

The drinks are kept cold with air-frozen block ice (or something like that), ice that won’t melt quickly and will still keep your drink cold. It looks like this:

icecube
And in a drink, like this:

mezcal

This is one of the craziest drinks, and bartender David’s fave–he calls it “surprising.” It starts with a spritz of mezcal in the glass, then a pour of tobacco-infused whiskey. It smells like a cigar, and when you take the first sip, you think you might be drinking cigar. But it has the most amazing, silky finish, making you want to keep sipping, and pondering how its flavors all came together so effortlessly.

Of course, these cocktails aren’t effortless, they are the result of Junior’s years of experience and scientific dedication–yes, he compares molecular breakdowns when thinking of flavors for drinks. We had amazing margaritas–not too sweet, not too sour–tasty sangria, and a special gin drink made with fresh cucumber and candied ginger. Refreshingly perfect.

The capper, of course, is Junior’s best-selling cocktail around the world: a rose concoction made with muddled roses and limes, something else I can’t remember (hey, it was the end of the night!) and topped with champagne.

rosedrinkrosedrinkfinal

Divine.

Add in the dancing they’ve promised–only the best DJs, and the freedom to spin whatever tunes they want–plus a live band every now and again, and you’ve got my new hangout. I will be frequenting Malverde and La Condesa as soon as they open … if not before. Open Thursday through Saturday evenings until 2am, 400-B West 2nd Street, www.malverdeaustin.com.

Tuesday: Fun, Sexy, Strappy

It’s almost like the commercials for My Bloody Valentine (The Perfect date movie: fun, sex, terror), minus any terror. Collectic Home is hosting an art unveiling tomorrow night, so check it out if you’re into that sort of thing (details after I marvel over Aces Lounge’s new offerings below) …

So who knew Aces Lounge is into country?! The burlesque bar best known for the Southern Sirens and their curtain tricks (you have to see it) are introducing an all-star Texas Tuesday lineup with 75 cent LoneStar tallboys. Cory Morrow opens it up by playing Aces tomorrow night at 7pm. The rest of February includes Mark McKinney, Ryan James, and Austin Collins. All three are famous Texan singer-songrwriters, and I’ve met & written articles about two of ‘em. :-) New Tuesday night fun!

Some thoughts from D.C.

I’m back from D.C. to some rain in the ATX, but it’s supposed to be 80 later this afternoon. I took the Texas weather with me to DC and we enjoyed blue skies and 60-70 degree weather my entire trip–so maybe I just caught it at a good time, but I loved DC. The thing DC and NYC and all the cities have that we don’t is little neighborhood nooks. Sure, we’re trying to turn downtown into a neighborhood, but it’s still downtown. We have Clarksville or SoCo or Bouldin, but those are just neighborhoods–no shops or restaurants or coffee (and yes, I realize they have West Lynn, Congress, and S First respectively with aforementioned shops etc. but that’s just ONE street for a whole neighborhood).

My friend lives in Capital Hill in the basement of a row house and it’s all just so cute. Maybe because it’s foreign to sprawled-out Texas, but row houses seem really neat. I understand that sharing close quarters like that and having no yards is not all that great, but from driving or walking down a street, they’re pretty cool.

So while Austin has its thrills and charms and flare all its own, what we don’t have is that real sense of NEIGHBORHOOD. Take my Brykerwoods neighborhood as an example. We’re two blocks in from the shops at Jefferson, Kerbey Lane, the wonderful Snow Pea, a Randalls, a wine bar, and more. But we certainly aren’t regulars there. Whereas in DC, the friend I stayed with walks to “her” Starbucks every morning, has “her” brunch place a mere 8 blocks from her house, and has “her” dinner spot just as close. 8 blocks sounds like nothing, but here? Whew, better get in the car. What’s with our attitude?

I don’t mean to be knocking on Austin–I mean geez, you guys know how much I love this place–but we’re very much a car culture. My brother hasn’t had a car since September and broke down and bought one this weekend (a Prius, natch, we have a compost too) because it’s just too hard to get around without. Sure, public transportation is partially to blame (um, dear City of Austin, could you please publicize the opening of the lightrail a little more? it’s REALLY FREAKIN COOL that we have one now), but I’d argue that the underlying issue is two-fold: density and attitude.

Density is the main issue because it makes no sense for there to be little shops dotting Clarksville when the number of potential residents is limited. Because we don’t live in close-quartered row houses, we don’t have the kind of densities that allow little markets and corner stores to survive. While we’re trying to institute these, the number of closures of these little guys signifies that sometimes “if you build it, they will come” has too long of a life cycle.

What’s the point here? I don’t know, just a little commentary on differences. After all, you don’t get Zilker Park and Town Lake in a DC either … I’m hoping this will inspire me to walk more, to try to get into more of a routine with “my” places, and to bring just a smidge of that DC life home–after all, I brought them a smidge of Texas. ;-)

Hello Tyson … free morning and afternoon screening

As if visiting a farm (see previous post) weren’t enough for a fun-filled Friday, the Carver is showing a free screening of Kings of the Evening, a Tyson Beckford-filled flick filmed in Austin! I’ve never been to anything there (though I attended adjacent Kealing Junior High), so I don’t know if you need tickets or reservations or a sleeping bag and pillow, but if you’re into abs and beautiful men, Tyson sure isn’t going to disappoint.

Check it out: Kings of the Evening, 10:30 am & 2 pm, Boyd Vance Theatre

From imdb:

Homer Hobbs, home after two years in jail, discovers that life on the outside can be crueler than the back-breaking injustice of the chain gang. He returns to a bleak urban town caught in the depths of the Great Depression – no jobs, no prospects, no hope – where he is thrown together with four strangers, each struggling to survive as they scratch and scheme to dig their way out of poverty. Life is grim. But on Sunday nights, in a dingy hall in a forlorn neighborhood, the men of the ghetto piece together the finest attire their meager lives can beg, borrow or steal to compete in an underground contest like no other. The big winner will go home with the five dollar prize. The real prize – far less tangible, yet priceless – is the chance to feel like a king, if just for an evening. To men like these, the touch of a woman, the adulation of the crowd, the feel of a fine-looking suit are proof enough that a man might yet escape the debasement of the ghetto. And only one can emerge – King of the Evening. Written by Robert Page Jones
