Weekend Cake

Austin is getting its own Ace of Cakes this weekend with the That Takes the Cake sugar art show and cake competition.

Hell yes.

See what top bakers from around the country can do with fondant, the pliable confection used to create lavish, 3-D cakes, and watch demonstrations. There will be kids’ cookie and cupcake decorating and plenty of samples. Presented by the Austin Capital Confectioners Cake Club, the 5th annual event is Saturday and Sunday at the Crockett Center, 10601 N. Lamar Blvd.

Tickets cost $7 on Saturday, $4 on Sunday or $10 for a weekend pass. Sign up for classes at www.thattakesthecake.org. Call All In One Bake Shop at 371-3401 for more information.

Don’t Bring Me Down Faux-Show

Local designer Rachel Fields and photographer Christina Shaffell created, styled, and shot a fictional band, then threw it a party. Friday at 8pm actual bands, filmmakers, some sort of fashiony thing, and photogs will celebrate the Faux Band. Whaaaaa?

Don't Bring Me Down

Rachel sounded cool enough when she emailed me, but Tolly at Austin Eavesdropper got a better handle on the whole thing, read her post about it here.

Heroes for Children comes to Austin!

Heroes for Children has quietly begun work in Austin at the Dell Children’s Hospital.

Heroes for Children is a Dallas-based nonprofit that provides financial and social assistance to families with children battling cancer. Financial assistance can be anything from rent or mortgage payments to cash, while social assistance includes the Laptops for Love program, the Heroes Milestones program that celebrates Sweet Sixteens, proms, and other important life events, and the Holiday Heroes program that brings the holidays to families in hospitals.

Events to raise money for the group include its signature Heroes & Handbags, a Golf Classic, a 5K Run/Walk, and a Hold ‘Em for Heroes poker tournament. As the group spends more and more time with families in Austin, it hopes to gather local support and eventually start fundraisers and more programming here. To get involved, click here.

One of my best friends is the Program Director for the group, so if you have any questions, feel free to contact me and I’ll connect you to her. Also, follow @Heroes4Children on twitter!

Charity Bash at Molotov

They say it better than me:

Charity Bash

They say: CharityBash is the perfect mix: entertainment, a good time, and philanthropy. It’s based on two simple ideas. First, we all deserve to relax and have fun. Second, for Austin to remain the city we love, we all need to support its nonprofits organizations. Spend time at a CharityBash and you’ll learn about the work a local group is doing to help Austin, have a chance to contribute to its programs, perhaps experience a new restaurant or bar, and laugh with friends.

I say: See you at Molotov! (and whilst you’re supporting charities, donate to Blondes vs Brunettes! www.bvbaustin.com)

Free food today!

Free cupcakes and pancakes! They don’t call it Fat Tuesday for nothing …

Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop (home of the most delicious peanut butter cupcake I’ve ever eaten) is celebrating their half birthday–that’s 183 days old–by giving away any baked good in their shop to the first 183 customers. After that, everything is half off! The South First shop opens at noon today.

If you don’t beat the rush, you’ll still snag a $1.25 cupcake, $1.12 dessert bar, or $.62 cookie!

Hop on over to IHOP for Free Pancake day!

National Pancake Day dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products…hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.

Each guest will receive one free short stack of pancakes from 7am to 10pm today. They do ask that you donate to Children’s Miracle Network, but still, free pancakes!! Details here.

Oscar Fashion = the fishtail is in

Fishtail? When a dress is a tight column until it poofs out at the bottom, it’s a fishtail. Also called a mermaid. Because, well, mermaids are women with fishtails.

Last night’s Oscars, which were marked by the fishtail, a number of red, white, and black gowns (white?!), some shimmery gowns, and a lot of updos and understatement, have been dubbed a smidge boring fashion-wise, but I think the return or emergence of the fishtail is very exciting. The fishtail is a fun end to a classic beginning!

Beyonce and Vanessa Hudgens both rocked the fishtail, I love Vanessa’s feathery flowery accents.

For other examples, see Diane Lane, Melissa George, and Taraji Henson.

Saturday is all about Craftin’ … unless you’re camping!

Austin Handmade Market

I first discovered etsy when I bought an “unfinished diamond” ring on a leather strap with a piece of metal. It looked awesome in the pictures, but when it arrived I was sad to be able to see the glue on my diamond, and I assumed that meant it was bad and would fall off. Two years later, it still exists, has not fallen off, and I still think of it as a bastion of my coolness. I’ve never gotten a compliment on it though …

I digress. Point is, etsy is an online portal for cool handmade stuff and they’re bringing it offline to South First. So go.

Then, Saturday night head to:

MAKE Out Sessions

… I will be camping at Inks Lake! Wish me warmth, hiking, campfires, and good times! And luck in Polish Horseshoes
