Austin Kidbits / Hill Country Ride Kick-Off Party

Thursday are perking back up after that nobody-does-anything-at-all lull over the holidays. Next week is going to be even bigger! Still, these two should keep you happy (houring).

Hill Country Ride for Aids 10th Anniversary Kick-Off Party at La Zona Rosa.

It’s for the Hill Country Ride for AIDS, a signature Austin event and the largest fundraiser in Central Texas for people living with HIV/AIDS. Doors open at 7, free food and music, cash bar. Come meet Riders and Donors while kicking it back and enjoying some tunes!

Austin Kidbits Birthday party

Wee, one of my fave stores that I won’t be shopping in for awhile (I’ve pulled products from them several times and LOVE their stuff and staff, but no babies are on my horizon) is hosting the Austin Kidbits birthday party, the stylish mama answer to Austin Tidbits. With cocktails and cupcakes from 6:30-8:30pm, guests will receive a 20 percent discount at Wee and next-door neighbor Finch.

A little taste of absinthe

When Peche opened on Fourth in the old Malaga spot, I was excited to try some absinthe. Not because I have ever particularly cared about absinthe, but because who doesn’t want to try something entirely new?

Right off, I loved the atmosphere. The wall behind the bar is library shelves of liquor with silver ladders to reach the top shelves–so classic. Love it. There are absinthe dispensers built into the bar, black glass chandeliers, and exposed venting around a wood-detailed ceiling. A little bit library, a little bit baroque? Totally works. I ordered some sort of Kubler absinthe–the mildest, because I hate the taste of black licorice–while my companion ordered us the crawfish appetizer. The absinthe was pleasantly mild and tasty to sip. But at $12 a pop, I’m not sure it’d be worth another.

The appetizer was awesome–creamy crawfish over a polenta cup. The polenta was perfectly textured and the crawfish sauce was great seasonings. We were so excited for our entrees–mine a crab tartine, his a redfish with crab sauce and green beans. The entrees left a little something to be desired. Mine was lumps of crab over two tomatoes on white bread. Not at all impressive. No seasonings. I mean, I like crab, so I simply ate the crab and tomato and left the tasteless white bread on my plate, but I expected better from the appetizer’s flavor. His redfish and crab creamsauce were better than my tartine, but the redfish left something to b desired and it’s pretty hard to mess up crab in cream, so we weren’t all that impressed. The green beans were pretty good, nicely crisp. But really, if the green beans are the saving grace … ?

As I write, I’m puzzled as to why I liked Peche, because I just recounted that my expensive drink was pleasantly mild (am I a grandma?) and my entree was bland. But while the menu needs work, a LOT of work, the atmosphere is good and the drinks good … it did, after all, make me really, really giggly. I wasn’t hallucinating and didn’t feel particularly drunk after just one, but even hours later I was just really, really giggly. A good drink, then! Maybe I’ll go back on a Sunday night, when they have $5 drinks and $5 sandwiches …

A little about absinthe, from wikipedia:

Absinthe is traditionally a distilled, highly alcoholic (45%-75% ABV) beverage. It is an anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs, including the flowers and leaves of the herb Artemisia absinthium, also called wormwood. Absinthe has a characteristic natural green colour but can also be colourless. It is often called “the Green Fairy”. Although it is sometimes mistakenly called a liqueur, absinthe is not bottled with added sugar and is therefore classified as a liquor.[1] Absinthe is unusual among spirits in that it is bottled at a high proof but is normally diluted with water when it is consumed. Absinthe originated in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Commercial distillation of absinthe in the United States resumed in 2007.

Fashion Genius for Fashion Week

I know I pimp the heck out of Dogeared, but I really just love them. And while we’re not going to be trekking around in the snow running from tent to tent at any Fashion Week any time soon, I really love this updated fanny pack (call it what it is!), a hipster bag with dangling charms, sueded trim, and a smidgeon of fringe. Awesome! At $93 it’s steeper than those hot-pink nylon fanny packs, but saving your style is also priceless.

First Love Second Chance Casting in Austin!

I have a very strict don’t date exes policy–after all, if it failed the first time, why would it work the second? Then again, I think I’ve dated most of my exes a good three or four times …

So when this came through my email, I had to post:

TV LAND’S FIRST LOVE, SECOND CHANCE CASTING NOW!

Ever wondered what happened to the one that got away? To your high school sweetheart or college love?

That’s the question at the heart of the new TV Land Program “First Love, Second Chance” which reunites former couples and gives them a glimpse of what life would have been like if they’d stayed together. In each one-hour episode, a former girlfriend and boyfriend who are currently single will be reunited. Will the passage of time and their differing life experiences have changed them beyond recognition? Will they be tempted once again by each other, or decide they can’t get far enough away?

“First Love, Second Chance” reveals whether true first love conquers all for the couples -or whether they discover that they had a lucky escape first time around!

If you are single, mid 30′s to mid to late 40′s and looking to reconnect with a past love, we want to hear from you!

If you’re interested in coming on our show please send us a brief synopsis of your story. Be as detailed as possible but try to limit your story to one paragraph. Please send it back to us at firstlovecasting@me.com ASAP to be considered for the show.

Casting Directors will be in the Austin area this weekend interviewing possible candidates.

Make sure to include:
1. When the relationship began and when it ended
2. Why you broke up
3. When the last time was that you were in contact with the person. Please include any and all contact information you have of them in order to aid us in the location process.
4. A current photo of yourself
5. All your contact information
- name, age and hometown
- your current location
- email address
- home and cell phone numbers
6. Any photos you have of the two of you as a couple.

… just keep in mind that you broke up for a reason!!

Celebs love Houstonite Alexandra Knight

Last night on the Golden Globes red carpet entrance and interview, Austin-loving Sandra Bullock was snapped carrying this turquoise alligator clutch from Houston designer Alexandra Knight.

Alexandra Knight clutch

The classic Magnolia-style clutch is one of the Alexandra Knight’s best-sellers, and Sandy’s turquoise is spot-on for Spring trends. And this isn’t the first time Bullock has carried an Alexandra Knight! Bullock, whose Austin house-building stalled as she duked it out with her contractors, is often spotted supporting local Texan talent.

Other celebs who’ve been snapped carrying Alexandra Knight include Hillary Swank, Michelle Williams, Sophia Bush, Mary J. Blige and others.

The Magnolia clutch retails for $2800. No one ever said celebs love cheap things …

The Perfect Four Seasons Brunch

After blogging about brunch at the Four Seasons in Houston, I had to make getting to ours in Austin a priority. So this Sunday, I brunched with a good friend at TRIO, the lakeside restaurant at the Four Seasons. It was a stunningly beautiful day, and we sat by a giant floor-to-ceiling window with a beautiful view of the green, grassy grounds and sparkling blue water of the lake. Perfect setting.

And brunch was literally perfect. TRIO is doing things right, focusing on taste, and has really edited their brunch down to what people are eating. Everything is fresh, tasty, and, like Houston’s Four Seasons brunch, surprisingly healthy and light. Or that may just be me, eating bowls of fresh berries–blackberries are my fave. But the other perfect thing about this brunch is the serving sizes–they make everything in mini! Silver-dollar-sized pancakes allow you to try one of each: blueberry, chocolate chip, and banana. The to-die-for brioche french toast is small to begin with and cut into even smaller pieces, allowing you to choose how much you want to indulge. Fudge-and-almond topped muffins are quartered so you can sample. Perfect!

Of course, there’s also the seared gulf shrimp with creamy risotto. Pineapple crepes. Lightly sauteed asparagus. Imported cheeses. Three salads. A few of my favorite things. And then there’s the seafood–perfect, thin-sliced ahi tuna, fresh sushi as good as Snow Pea or Silhouette, those crab claws (I only ate 4 this time, not a million like I did in Houston), ceviche, three varieties of salmon with–of course–MINI bagels and lox… so amazing.

They also have a massive carving station and some meat dishes, plus sausage, bacon, and eggs, of course. I didn’t dabble, because while they have one free-range steak on their dinner menu, I’m betting they didn’t use it for the brunch. But for you meat-eaters out there, I think you’d be satisfied.

Oh, and then there was dessert. Minis, of course. Their new (ok, she’s been there like over a year now) pastry chef is an award-winner, and it shows in the desserts. I only nibbled on a gingerbread-apple tart, a creative use of two of my fave flavors. But I held back for the sake of the chocolate fountain. They only offer a TRIO of things to dip in it: strawberries (obvi), marshmallows, and rice krispies treats. Real, they-made-them-in-the-kitchen-they-didn’t-come-out-of-the-blue-foil-bag rice krispies treats. Then you cover it in chocolate. Divine!

Oh, and the mimosas were really, really bottomless. I’m pretty sure my glass never got below the half-full mark. Danger! But good danger. And our server was sweet, helpful with the suggestions, and kept my water and mimosa fuller than full. So great. It was perfect too–I felt like a stuffed myself, but with healthy food, and when I went to play basketball with some friends an hour later, I was able to run up and down the court! (No offense Moonshine, but that just wouldn’t be true if I brunched with you.)

It’s on the expensive side ($48 for adults, $20 for kids, under age 5 is free!), but for a special occasion–or any Sunday, really–it’s totally worth it. I love TRIO at the Four Seasons! 10am-2pm.

Only one caveat: no popovers. :-(

I hereby dub this shopping week

While everyone else is “Free Week”ing it–let those live-music lovers revel–I think we should be shopping. Mainly because I’ve found a lot of great deals to share with you! Apparently there’s a website out there about local shopping called Shop512. Now, snotty native that I am, I don’t think I need this, but surely it could help newbies find some good shopping off the beaten path. Plus, there’s a sales section, and who can resist that?
