Scooter?

I’ve been mulling over buying a scooter. We all know I’ve tried to be eco-friendly, but the biking was more funny that practical. Plus, for a fashionable gal, it’s just not practical in the summer heat–I can’t show up everywhere with helmet-hair and sweat stains! Perhaps a Vespa would keep me cooler …

But alas, Scooters take a lot of research. And while I’m being lazy, my 88,000+ miles well-travelled luxury SUV is continuing to suck up gas money–mid-grade fuel?! So I’m putting out a call to you guys, who served me so well with the bike info … can someone fill me in on scooters?

These are my questions:

- What is the best brand? cheapest? best value?

- Where’s the best place to buy in Austin?

- Who rides one? Do you get sweaty? Where do you park them? Do you get tickets at meters?

- How much of a dork/eco-crusader/happy cruiser do you feel like while riding a scooter?

- Do you ride your scooter downtown at night?

- What do you do if it’s raining?!?!

… and is an electric car a better choice?! I don’t know a lick about them either … where are the guides on this sort of thing?!

otherwise, i only know of the vespa store across lamar from whole foods…

  2. My husband and I both have scooters, and we love them! To answer your questions:
**We both have Honda Metropolitans. They’re cute but fairly inexpensive (mine was a 2007 and was $1300, but since we were buying two, they gave us a deal and made it $1100!). It’s a 49cc, which means it only goes up to 45mph, which is fine for us because we wouldn’t want to scoot on the highway anyway.
**We bought ours from Zee at Woods Fun Center. He was great with us, but friends who have gone there had not-so-great experiences, so who knows?
**In the summer, you can seriously get sweaty and gross on your commute home at 5pm. In the mornings, it’s nice and cool, so you won’t be sweaty for work. Right now it’s actually pretty chilly in the mornings. As for parking, I’ve never tried meter parking during the day, but at night I’ll just slip it in between two parallel-parked cars, or at the end of the row. I’ve seen scooters parked on sidewalks, too, though I can’t comment on whether they’ve received tickets.
**I don’t really feel self-conscious about riding my scooter…it’s too much fun.
**I always ride my scooter downtown at night! Easy parking!
**I do wear a full-face helmet (due to family experiences with no-helmet crashes), so in the rain I just drop the facemask and I’m good. I have a thin rain jacket, too. I will say I’ve only ridden in light rain…if it were raining hard, I’d pull over and attempt to wait it out.

Good luck! If you ever want to test one out, you’re welcome to take mine for a spin around the block. :)

  3. Crystal, you’re amazing! Thanks for answering all my questions AND offering me a ride on your scooter. :-) You’re very convincing on the joys of a scooter!
