Review: Thai Passion

Another hidden gem on Congress! (Like Silhouette Sushi) After wandering around Congress for an hour or so looking for somewhere to eat last Friday night–why didn’t my parents believe me when I said there’d be a wait anywhere downtown on a Friday night?!–we stumbled up Thai Passion at long last, tucked away on 7th Street just west of Congress.

There was no wait at 8:00 on a Friday, so we were thrilled about that. We ordered the soft spring rolls (I forget what they called them) to start and they were delish–fresh and tasty, stuffed with thin vermicelli, shrimp, a big juicy chunk of cucumber and some other veggies.

For entrees, we ordered our dishes “without much oil,” which is always risky. They came out ungreasy and still very tasty! I ordered a veggie-and-shrimp plate that had a lovely, not overwhleming flavor. My mom ordered a noodle dish with veggies and chicken, and she loved it. She shared a few of the thin vermicelli noodles with me, and they were perfectly cooked and tasted good with my own veggies! My uncle ordered the pineapple fried rice curry, which was served in half of a pineapple. It looked good and tasted good too.

Everything was good, but I just can’t call Thai Passion great. I call it a hidden gem because it’s a 4 1/2 star citysearch winner with delicious food in downtown. I’m sure it’s packed at lunch. But the thing was that it didn’t stick out in my mind … I didn’t LOVE it, although I certainly enjoyed it. So I’m thinking I need to give it another go ’round before I make up my mind. But with so many delicious restaurants to try in Austin, is it even worth another go? Any regulars have an opinion on that?

Reminder: Plan on hitting up Free Sushi & Sake at Imperia this Thursday!

  1. I would love to go to the Imperia thing, but so far your blog is the only place I’ve seen it posted. Is it still happening? I just didn’t want to show up expecting free food, haha.

  2. Hey Ann! It’s definitely on! RARE mag (where I initially saw the ad) sends out an e-newsletter and today it confirmed that the free sushi & sake at Imperia is happening tomorrow!

… I don’t know why it isn’t posted more places. It’s probably be one of those things where the restaurant want tons of people to come, but sort of doesn’t at the same time. I’m doing my best to pack the house though! :-)

  3. Yes, go again and get T7, Pla Sum Rod. It will stick out in your mind for sure. Try the seafood hot plate as well, it is very good. Passion is one of the better Thai restaurants in the city as far as freshness and quality of ingredients go.
